HINTS AND TIPS FOR SPREADING YOUR MATERIALS
When spreading shingle on driveways or paths try to avoid the Brighton beach effect. If the spread is too deep then you may find yourself wading through the shingle.
When calculating the depth for 10m pea shingle, aim for 1 inch depth. For 20m shingle, aim for 1.5 inches depth.
If you are using a vibratory plate or roller on very damp or wet binding material, avoid over-vibration as this will draw up the fats to the surface and in effect push the large stones to the bottom, leaving a muddy jelly-like surface that can take months to settle.
When using any binding material in a period of very dry weather, one ideally needs a 15% moisture content. The best way to judge this is to grab a handful and form a cricket ball like shape in your hands. If you open your palms out flat and the ball like shape collapses you need to add more water. Further to that, add water to the heap before spreading so that the binding material and stones stay combined.
When levelling a binding material make sure you invert the rake to prevent all the stone being drawn to the surface, in effect causing a bony surface with few fines.
